"Sensemaking is tested to the extreme when people encounter an event whose occurrence is so implausible that they hesitate to report it for fear they will not be believed. In essence, these people think to themselves, it can't be, therefore, it isn't." Karl E. Weick
I'm writing a paper on sensemaking. This fragment was taking from Weick's book "Sensemaking in Organizations". I believe the richness of my paper will not only be based on my own conclusions regarding sensemaking but also on people's ideas regarding sensemaking. What do you have to say about the fragment? Enrich me with your thoughts! (English or Spanish) Thanx! -------------------------------------------------- |

Enrich me with your thoughts! (English or Spanish) Thanx! >-------------------------------------------------- The problem with the 'sensemaking' assertion is that the word "sense" itself is an ambiguous term. "Sense" is an analytical "thought process" derived from either ones personal experience or (learned) knowledge. Hence, what makes sense to me can be totally absurd to another. If you indefinitely toss 7 coins in the air, is it sensible to expect that at some point they will all land heads up? Would the expectation be sensible or 'ridiculous'? And then, when it does happen, and you exclaim "I knew it would happen"!, is this sensemaking? My response to your query: Does it make sense to you? It makes perfect sense to me! Hence the problem! The word sense is a "slippery drop of liquid mercury" - impossible to put your finger on it and have a definitive definition. Keep your eyes open to the use of the word sense in the magazines, newspapers, you'll see how senseless the word is. Good luck on your project. -------------------------------------------------- |
