GERVASONI SÃO PAULO - SP ------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.greyhounds.org/gnn/contents/fall97/worldF97.html#anchor95945 CNN - Horror in Spain: Barbaric Killing of Greyhounds Exposed [This story is brutally graphic. Reader discretion is strongly advised. - Ed.] Medina del Campo: A four-page investigative report recently published in the Spanish magazine Interviu, confirms earlier accounts of the barbaric custom of hanging greyhounds at the end of their usefulness, either as racers or as coursing and hunting dogs. "The greyhound who runs well dies by hanging so he will have a quick death in thanks for his service," is a common refrain among greyhound owners. Greyhounds who don't perform well, however, suffer an agonizingly slow death: they are hung by the neck from tree limbs with their rear feet just touching the ground and die from asphyxiation when their legs tire and give out from under them. Others are hung by one leg or simply tied to a tree and left to die slowly from hunger and thirst. Interviu reported that hundreds of greyhounds were found hanging from trees in the pine groves near this small town 100 miles northwest of Madrid in the Castile and Leon region of the country but added this practice is also common in Zamora, Andalucia and Madrid. Nearly a dozen full-color photographs by Interviu photojournalist Fernando Abizanda accompanied the text and provided uncompromisingly graphic evidence of this unspeakable inhumanity. Several local greyhound owners vehemently denied any responsibility for the atrocities and told Interviu that outsiders were to blame. An unidentified person was quoted as saying. "When we kill our greyhounds we bury the animals... we have dogs who are 14 years old and they are here." The barbaric Spanish practice of killing unwanted greyhounds by hanging was first exposed by Madrid-based Associacion Nacional Para La Defensa De Los Animales (ANDA) last year. Photographs taken by ANDA were sent to the Brussels-based Eurogroup for Animal Welfare, who issued a press release several months ago calling for international support to stop the killings. The thousands of greyhounds that are surplus to the racing industry are more likely to end their days, not in front of a warm fire, but drowned, poisoned, beaten to death, starved, dumped on the streets or impounded and destroyed. (ESTOS CENTOS DE GREYHOUNDS QUE SON MANDADOS PARA LAS INDUSTRIAS DE CORRIDAS ESTAN MÁS FADADOS À ACABAREM SUS DIAS COMO SE NON FUERAM NADA, SIENDO QUEIMADOS, AFOGADOS, ESPANCADOS ASTA LA MUERTE, MUERTOS DE HAMBRE, DEJADOS EN LAS CALLES PARA SEREM MUERTOS OU SON APENAS DESTRUIDOS) Greyhound puppies are killed if they fail to reach racing standards. Around two thirds are deemed fit, whilst the others will be put to death before they reach a year old. (LOS PERROS DE GREYHOUND SON MUERTOS SE NO TIENEN FUERZAS PARA LAS CORRIDAS. MAS DE 75% DE LOS PERROS SON MUERTOS, LOS OTROS SERAN PUESTOS PARA MORIR COM UN ANO DE IDAD). Substantial numbers of greyhounds are exported to Spain for racing, hunting and coursing. Conditions in some Spanish kennels are appalling and many greyhounds are locked up 23 hours a day. Hunters and coursers often dispose of unwanted dogs by hanging and other horrifically cruel methods. The natural lifespan of a greyhound is about 14 years, but the lives of most of those in racing end at 2 years old. Most greyhound owners and trainers, who are in the business to make a profit, are not prepared to pay the costs of allowing greyhound to live out their natural lives. Many are not even willing to pay the price of having the dogs humanely put to sleep by a vet. There is just no way that good homes could ever be found for so many thousands of greyhounds every year. Greyhound racing inevitably leads to massive killing and suffering. The only real solution is abolition. What you can do to help Don't attend greyhound racing and never bet on a greyhound race. Better still, boycott bookmakers altogether, as many greyhound tracks are owned by the betting industry. Write to your MP and newspaper letters pages to express your disgust at this so-called 'sport'. Ask newspapers not to cover greyhound racing on their sports pages. Tell your family and friends about the suffering involved in greyhound racing and ask they to boycott it. Collect signatures for our petition to abolish greyhound racing. Write to us for a petition form and/or copies of a leaflet to distribute. Send a donation to help our campaign to protect greyhounds from suffering. A few lucky dogs are saved. Contact your local animal sanctuary or dogs home if you can offer an a loving home to an ex-racing greyhound. Thanks for anything you can do! Do you wear Spanish shoes and carry Spanish handbags? Are you thinking about a trip to sunny Spain, where you may see greyhound dogs hanging in trees and burned alive? Hanging and impaling of live greyhounds continues in Spain. These dogs desperately need your help to end these barbaric practices. JosŽ M. Allendesalazar, Consul General of Spain, fully admitted knowledge of these horrific acts at a meeting with SAVE THE GREYHOUND DOGS!. He commented that outsiders must be the ones to bring an end to these deeds in Spain, through their wallets. Boycott Spanish products and travel. Hit them in the wallet--money talks! Write letters to the officials involved. Please let us educate you about the Spanish greyhound tragedy. STGD! has prepared a new and more expansive information packet, which includes a collage of color photographs (difficult to look at, but a must to tell the true story). The packet also includes sample letters, product lists, officials' names, etc. When ordering, please send $5.00 to defray STGD! mailing/printing costs. Correspondence has transpired between Louise Barra and the Spanish Commercial office in Washington, D.C. Louise expressed her anger and contempt regarding greyhound abuse in Spain. Mr. Rafael Vinuela's response trivialized her concern. It is our opinion that his response is a classic example of this country's politicians disgusting attitudes and is another attempt to fluff off the incredible tragedy existing in Spain. How insulting to dare respond with a one-sentence letter attempting to fool all of us! His response is a thinly veiled attempt to deceive us. Make your feelings known. Write to: Embassy of Spain 2375 Pennsylvania Ave. NW Washington, D.C. 20037 phone 202-728-2340;fax number: 202-833-5670 Note Please send STGD! any currency from the following countries: Spain, Germany, England, Ireland, and Scotland. After returning from a trip abroad, people often find leftover foreign currency in their luggage or coat pockets. We will forward currency to Anne Finch in England for use with her "Greyhounds in Need" program. Specifically, the money will be used to rescue greyhounds from the deplorable situation in Spain and relocate them. Please be a part of this program. She needs our help. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.times-news.freedom.com/1999/99-03/99-03-19/news-2.html Group seeks home for spanish dogs By ANSLEE WILLETT Times-News Images of abused greyhounds in Spain are touching hearts as far away as Burlington. Greyhound Friends of North Carolina is joining a worldwide effort to help rescue 500 to 1,000 abandoned racing greyhounds in Spain and bring them to the United States for adoption. “We have to offer some way out for some of them, that’s the hard part,” said Randy Barrow, director of the organization. “Going there is easy.” On Saturday, Barrow and Ralph Yerex of Brassfield Animal Hospital in Greensboro plan to travel to a temporary shelter that has been set up in Spain for the greyhounds. Barrow and Yerex will evaluate the conditions of the greyhounds and provide medical care. “There’s a lot of unknown factors about what we’ll find when we’ll get there,” Barrow said. Travel costs alone for the six-day trip are estimated at $5,000. US Airways, which has flights out of Madrid, has offered to fly seven greyhounds at a time to the United States with each scheduled flight, said Elaine Bunting of Burlington, a member of Greyhound Friends’ board of directors. But more help is needed. Bunting hopes corporations with airplanes will also offer to transport the greyhounds; crates will have to be purchased for each dog that is transported to the United States. Greyhound Friends is asking the community to make donations for the rescue effort or to consider adopting a greyhound. “If we don’t get donations, we’ll have to pay for it,” Barrow said. “But we just don’t have that kind of money sitting around. If we get donations, we can do more.” All but one of Spain’s racetracks have recently closed; the last one is set to close March 30. The closings are leaving about 500 to 1,000 greyhounds homeless, said Barrow. Only about 1 percent to 5 percent of racing greyhounds in Spain are adopted, he said, and the rest are often inhumanely euthanized or used as bait for pit bull training. Barrow said racing greyhounds in Spain are routinely starved and abused; some are forced to race with broken bones. The goal is to get as many of the greyhounds as possible exported to the United States and then distribute them throughout adoption programs. Bunting is urging the community to help the greyhounds, which she describes as “forgiving.” “No matter what’s been done to them, no matter how bad they’ve been abused, they still love human contact,” she said. “They crave it.”Home Page ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------- |
